Welcome to the Team – Edgar “WILLO” Juarez

Here is a short clip of Edgar doing some training over at THE WORKSHOP LB bike shop on his fresh built UNKNOWN LV2 track bike. He is not only the newest, but the first member to the UNKNOWN BIKE CO. fast bike team. Not only did Edgar join up with UNKNOWN BIKE CO. but he has also joined forces with THE WORKSHOP LB. I expect some big things in the near future for Willo. Right now he is focusing hard on racing on the velodrome but training vigorously for the upcoming Lord of Griffith race on September 2nd. To Edgar he is still a “UNKNOWN” just like the bike he rides and until he keeps winning I can promise you that he won’t stop until he is number one. This guy is a beast and you can find him training everyday over at THE WORKSHOP LB pushing a 49/14 ratio like it ain’t no thang !! #YOUKNOWWAZGOOD !!

KIDICAL MASS group bike ride for kids

So this Sunday August 19th. there will be a “Kidical Mass” ride leaving from Los Cerritos Park in Long Beach, Ca. at at 1:00 pm. This bike ride is mainly for little kids and families to come out and ride together in a safe friendly environment while learning about bikes and bike safety. This ride was first brought to my attention by GRAHAM BADEN(HEAD MECHANIC AT THE WORKSHOP LB). Graham is also a parent so he tries to get involved in events that promote kids to ride bikes. This Sunday you can find Graham and myself out at this event working on bikes and handing out free helmets to kids, all compliments of THE WORKSHOP and PRO-TEC HELMETS.

When you come out this Sunday please remember the theme is to decorate your bikes ! Kids and adults of all ages are welcome to attend this event. The ride will leave promptly at 1:00 pm from Los Cerritos Park led by Olympic Cyclist Tony Cruz. The route is about 2.5 miles and will end at Summerset Park for a BBQ. If you have questions please call (562)-595-0081 or email info@bixbyknollsinfo.com

WHAT IS KIDICAL MASS?
Kidical Mass is a legal, safe and FUN bike ride for kids, kids at heart, and their families. The first ride was held in April 2008 in Eugene, Oregon and has now spread to over a dozen communities throughout North America and beyond. The rides are Xtracyclemeant to be family friendly bike rides through a community.

Kidical Mass Bixby Knolls will host rides that connect the community to the businesses in Bixby Knolls. Our goal is to show people how easy it is to get around in Bixby Knolls by bike and support local business.

All types of bikes, trailers, trail-a-bikes, Xtracycles, longtails, bakfiets, Long Johns, tandems, folders, trikes, and whatever rolls are welcome! We celebrate the fact that Kids are Traffic Too and aim for family fun on vehicles that don’t hurt the future! It’s just another excuse to pedal around town with your family.

Los Fixie Riders: L.A. Latino Teens on Why They Prefer Fixed Gear Bikes

So when I first saw this video I could not help but chuckle a bit to myself about how funny it would be to watch this video with some Beavis and Butthead style commentary but I still am thinking about doing that but in the mean time I took some screenshots of some of the people that are interviewed throughout this video and shared some of their best quotes from the video. Either way you look at this video its funny and also passes along some great information along to young Latino riders out there to get inspired to ride a fixie bike. It is so awesome to see so many kids getting on these bikes that I love. I just wish some people would educate themselves a bit more on the bikes and their history but either way this fixed gear phenomenon is here to stay and grow.

EMMANUEL – 18 years old
Huntington Park, Ca.

“A fixie are way faster than mountain bike, speed bikes, anything. Because they are single gear.”

“If you cruz around too, You find white people, Black people.”

JASMINE – 18 years old
San Gabriel, Ca.

“Well they say its easier cuz like you just keep going ya know. You don’t have to struggle with the pedals.”

JOE
Bike Lane – Mid City Bicycle Shop
(Joe is a real Latino … peep the hickey on his neck. That is legit)

“Well it’s just something that came back up, it’s actually something ahh that was used back in the day, a fixie riding. Where you pedal forward and backward and now it’s just something fun for kids to do.”

ROGER – 18 years old
Los Angeles, Ca.

“There’s tricking fixies and then there’s riding fixies.”

“Not many people like it, think think it’s dangerous, but to me ………………. it’s uhh …. it’s…… I just like doing it. I like biking, I like riding, and to get faster and to lie get somewhere maybe like get sponsored or do something with the bike.”

OZY – 17 years old
Mid City, Ca.

“Well if you don’t have a brake some cities are really, nah like mean. Like so they stop you and if you don’t have a brake or a helmet or if its dark and you don’t have a light they will give you a ticket. And then, and then … well they like give you a ticket. So yeah, that’s only like the cities that are evil.”

ONYX – 18 years old
Los Angeles, Ca.

“And the thing about the wind cutters is ahh, the flyers right here are everything. Ahh I pretty much put it too my liking. Ahh these are raves, Sunset Shuffle, Starbucks, and on the other side we have Reggaeton is for music.”

ROGER – 17 years old
Mid City, Ca.

“Everybody is riding them, especially Mexicans.”

BIKE THIEF CAUGHT

This is a great video showing how a cyclist is able to recover his stolen bike and also capture this experience on video to share with everyone in the world. So to break down what had happened here, the guy who made this video had got his bike stolen about a week prior to this video. When he saw his bike reposted for sale on Craigslist he decided to take action with a group of friends and confront the thief and try and recover his stolen bike. When arriving to their meeting spot the original bike owner was greeted by the thief and his girlfriend. After the thief is called out for stealing the bike and was told that the police where on their way he began to run away from the scene and later gets caught by a cop while he was throwing bike parts so he was not caught with anything. The story even gets better. The thief is arrested and booked with a felony charge of “trafficking stolen property” and his car was also impounded in a result of is arrest. This is something that rarely happen but we all need to watch stuff like this and learn from other peoples mistakes and experiences. I definitely can not stand anyone who steals bikes so I hope we can come together to help prevent more people like this from continuing to steal or bikes !

So this past Saturday was a blast !! I had so much fun out there with everybody that came out to the event. I remember showing up to the Staples Center to see hundreds of riders having fun and ready for a fun filled day of riding. I will be making a video of this event so be prepared for that. I want to thank all my cameramen that came out to help film this event because without all of your help I would not have been able to do this to the scale I wanted to. I want to encourage anyone who was at this event to email me their photos and or video clips to mashafix@gmail.com along with their information so I may credit you for your work if it is used. I also want to thank all of the Sponsors that helped make this day happen. My intent was to make this day dedicated to all the kids out there that support Mashafix.com and everything I do. Without all of you out there showing your support for the blog this past year I do not think I could have kept it going so I thank all of my fans out there. I plan on throwing more and more events so be prepared for that because it is all about giving back to the cycling community in which I love so much. So stay tuned to Mashafix.com for more updates and photos ! #YOUKNOWWAZGOOD

“WHATCHAMACALLIT” matt reyes

Here is a sick new trick by Slum that he had posted up via WHEELTALKFIXED.COM. Matt his a nitch for stuff like this and his style makes everything look so dialed. He is definitely one of my favorite riders to watch.

It’s basically a pedal feeble nack nack w/ or w/o the barspin for added flavor.” -Matt Reyes via WHEELTALKFIXED.COM

TOUR DE FRANCE enter the mountain stages

So the past 2 weeks have been nothing but early mornings for me because to watch the Tour De France live I am up by 5 am hahaha ! It is definitely worth waking up early to watch. I swear by the time I am done watching it I just want to jump on my bike and put in some miles. If you do not have cable tv or a television in general your still in luck. Just go online and purchase the FULL ACCESS PACKAGE at the NBC SPORTS website for about $24 however as the stages go by the prices do drop. If you have a iPhone or iPad I would suggest downloading the mobile app because the price is much cheaper and if you have a cable to connect your mobile device to your tv then you can still stream the coverage just like getting the online pass. Anyways the Tour is about half way threw so you can still watch all the action and reply pass stages by going to NBC SPORTS website.
