INTERBIKE 2012 // American Classic Aero 420

One of the stops I had to make sure I hit at the 2012 Interbike show in Las Vegas, NV was the AMERICAN CLASSIC booth. I have been hearing so much about these wheels lately and I decided to do some investigating for myself so that I could share it with all of you out there.

I have always been a huge fan of the “Mavic Ellipse” wheelsets, however, I myself have had many problems recently with my set of Ellipse wheels. So when it comes down to performance I believe in taking a scientific approach towards building your bike, especially when it comes to building up your race or “track bike”. One huge difference I noticed between the Mavic Ellipse and the AERO 420 by AMERICAN CLASSIC was the overall weight. The Mavic Ellipse wheelset weighs in at appx. 1895 grams with the rear wheels weighing appx. 995 grams and the front wheel weighing appx. 905 grams. The AMERICAN CLASSIC AERO 420 wheelset weighs appx. 1585 grams, with a rear wheel weight coming in at 840 grams and the front weighing only 745 grams. This is already a huge difference when you are able to drop appx. 315 grams just by switching wheelsets to the AERO 420 WHEELS. This is absolutely astonishing to me because most full carbon wheels do not even weigh less than 1585 grams for a set ! There is appx. 453.59237 grams in one pound and by shaving 315 grams on just the wheelset you use will drop your overall bike weight by .6944651 pounds (appx. 3/4 of a pound). Now keep in mind that the Mavic Ellipse wheelset comes with 20 spokes in the front and rear wheel and has a 30mm deep rim profile. When this is compared to the AERO 420 WHEELS you can not help but notice the differences. The AERO 420 WHEELS have a 34mm deep rim profile and have a spoke count of 24 in the rear and 18 in the front wheel. Technically the AMERICAN CLASSIC wheels have 2 more total spokes than the ellipse wheels and also have a deeper profile rim but still weigh less than the Mavic Ellipse wheelset. One thing I must point out in the design of the rear AERO 420 wheel is that it has 24 spokes compared to only 20 with the Ellipse wheel. By adding 4 spokes to the rear wheel you will notice a significant difference in the stiffness of the wheel compared to the Mavic ellipse. When you are trying to shave seconds off your time you do not want any flexing of the wheels when applying torque because any flex in the wheel will make you lose power.

The next key feature I would like to point out about the AMERICAN CLASSIC AERO 420 WHEELS is their use of ceramic bearings. When using a ceramic bearing you are doing two things. One, the ceramic bearings are going to be lighter in weight compared to any other kinds of bearings. Two, because these are ceramic they offer superb rolling with little to no resistance while also maintaining performance over a long period of time or use. This is something to think about when choosing a good track wheelset that you plan on riding on the street and on the track. I know the next wheelset I own is going to be the AMERICAN CLASSIC AERO 420 WHEELS without a doubt.

I would like to thank all of the crew at AMERICAN CLASSIC who helped me out during my Interbike 2012 visit to their booth. I would also like to thank Helen for sitting down with me and going over their product line and making me a true believer in the products they manufacture.

FORTUNE 700 SERIES TIME TRIAL recap

fortune700flyer

So yesterday was the first of four events for the Fortune 700 Race to the End of Summer Sessions III. The racers were faced with a 3 lap time trial of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Ca. Each lap was approximately 3.57 miles which ended up being a total of 10.71 miles. This was mapped out courtesy of the event coordinators for this event series. I think the highlight of the day had to be the run by Edgar “WILLO” Juarez, who finished with a time of 20:37 which was 1 minute and 22 seconds ahead of the second place time for mens fixed gear. Not only was Edgar’s time good enough to win the Mens 1st. Place for fixed gear, but his time also beat the 1st. Place Mens Road division by 31 seconds !!! WOW ! THIS GUY IS A BEAST !!!! Edgar “WILLO” Juarez averaged a pace of appx. 31.16 mph for the entire 10.71 mile time trial. I still can not explain how incredible this was to see happen and the fact that he is a good friend made it that much more special. So congratulations again to Edgar and to all of the winners yesterday who came out and gave it their all. I can not wait to see what happens next Sunday !

PRODUCT REVIEW // FAMLI STRAPS los angeles

I think the first thing that stood out to me with the STRAPS was the color purple. I have yet to see very many companies use such a deep color purple like FAMLI STRAPS does. Besides that I like how the straps are reinforced with metal at the ends of the straps to keep them from fraying over time. The straps are also fairly stiff yet not to stiff so for some it may be a more comfortable strap for everyday use as well as tricking. After 2 weeks of vigorous testing these straps look pretty good for the abuse they were put threw. So if you are looking for a good Fixed Freestyle strap that is not only affordable but comes in many different color options then I suggest you check these out. I will have them down at THE WORKSHOP LB on display for a few days so if you are in the area be sure to come by and check them out…. and did I mention they are HAND MADE RIGHT HERE IN LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA !

The top tube pad is definitely longer than most top tube pads I have seen or have used before. For those of you that are doing tricks this is definitely going to cover the entire top tube so if you are looking for a new top tube pad FAMLI STRAPS has got you covered their and they have many different color options to choose from as well.

The HIP POUCH is very spacious and also has a hidden pocket built in that if there was not a note attached to the hip pouch when they sent it to me I would have never found it hahahahah ! Besides the secret pocket I really like that this bag has plenty of space to fit all my tools, tube, and bike pump for when I want to go for a ride and not have to lug around a huge bag. One thing I noticed about this pouch was that it did not have a U-Lock holster built in to it as many other hip pouches on the mark have built in. However despite this I could really care lees because the size of the pouch makes up for that and I have always been one to put my U-Lock in my belt as I ride.

PRODUCT REVIEW state bicycle co. “CONTENDER”

It was back in April of this year that I first got to see the CONTENDER from STATE BICYCLE CO. I have always been a huge fan of steel frames so when I saw Scott and Andre’s bikes at the Red Bull event I was eager to learn more about these. Now their bikes were built up with some high end components however the way the CONTENDER comes stock is still a great ride and value right out of the box. The first thing that catches my eye is the iridescent silver paint job, it definitely catches your eye. Then I started to check out the components on the bike from its carbon fiber fork to its SRAM power spline crank set. The bike has a very comfortable ride and its geometry is not to aggressive to ride on the street everyday to commute yet with a few changes in components the bike is race worthy. The bike comes standard with a 48/16 gear ratio which for some may be a bit strong yet the 172.5 crank arms give you more leverage to make this ratio feel like a piece of cake. So if you are in the market for a good steel frame bike that come complete at a good price I would definitely check out the STATE BICYCLE SITE.

HURLEY x LDG AERO by josh harris

Custom paint artist JOSH HARRIS was asked by Hurley to do a custom paint job to match their new board shorts they launched for this years US Open of surfing. Josh was also the same person who painted my bike as well. He does in credible work and time after time I stand back amazed at what he produces. The colors and gradients are absolutely insane on this custom LDG AERO FRAME. If you are looking for someone who does good work I would suggest hitting him up. If you are one of my followers on instagram then you have already seen the picture I posted up from a photo shoot with THEFIXFIXFIX with my bike that was painted by Josh. Be sure to check that out.

WOLFPACK HUSTLE DRAG RACE COVERAGE by mashafix.com

1st. PLACE MEN – TIM MCGEE

1st. PLACE WOMAN – BEATRIZ RODRIGUEZ

PHOTOS BY – JAHROME/MASHAFIX.COM ®

So the 2012 WOLFPACK HUSTLE drag races have come to an end but the memories of the epic night will forever be engrained into hundreds of cyclists and fans that came out to this event. I can not begin to tell you how amazing this event was. I really have to hand it to the WOLFPACK HUSTLE for throwing such a awesome event and I would like to thank all of the people that helped put this together because you guys all did a great job. I will admit that going into this night my mind was set on seeing my good friend Edgar “willo” Juarez win this event however that is not what had happened in the end. He definitely did a great job out there and is still number one in my book.

The night started at around 5 pm with the crews setting up the tunnel for the night but this event went on until almost 3 in the morning ! At about 7 pm racers began to show up and register for their individual heats. As racers got there ankle straps to record their qualifying times I found myself wandering around and checking out all the booths and the CITY GROUNDS athlete zone. They really out did themselves with the “athlete zone” by stoking it full of food and drinks ranging from coconut water to bananas and there had to be at least a good 8-10 stations for racers to warm up on and bike stands ready for anyone to work on their bikes. Now the event was also equipped with areas all along the inside of the tunnel where people could safely lock there bikes up and watch the event. Now all of this was topped off with a finishing area filled with concession stands of food and booths set up for some of the event sponsors to display their products and goods. From what I was told it cost approximately $9000 for the WOLFPACK HUSTLE to obtain permits from the city of Los Angeles to throw this event. As we all know money like this is hard to come by so its a must that we thank all the sponsors from this event for contributing and combining their efforts to make this happen.

Now for the fun part, THE RACES !!!! I can say this for sure, if you missed this event then you definitely missed out on a great time. I have never been to drag races like this before or any in general. I think one of my most favorite parts of going threw the pictures I took from last night was the expressions on the racers faces. Whether it was them preparing their thoughts before take off or the pure effort they put into the beginning strokes of their races they all showed what ever emotion they were going threw on their face with the most gritty and hilarious looks no matter which heat you watched. I spent most of my time down at the starting line taking pictures and wishing many of the riders good luck. I really wish I could have been at the finish line to see these racers whiz by at speeds in excess of 35+ mph but being at the start was just as good. One of the biggest factors all night I heard from races was what gear ratio to use. I did notice whoever used a heavier gear ratio was usually left off the line but would noticeably start to catch their opponents down the stretch. Since the race was only 1000 feet it took a gear ratio with a happy medium yet these guys were still going over 30 mph the entire night. As the night dwindled down its racers from 300 to the top 16 men and woman you could feel the intensity grow as these racers were being eliminated one race at a time.

For the woman it was Beatriz Rodriquez that took home the dog tags posting a initial qualifying time of 28.08 seconds which was about three quarters of a second slower than the top qualifying time of Shelby Walter. Beatriz ended up taking out Shelby in the semi final heat to face off against Lindsey Nelson. When Beatriz lined up for the woman’s final I could see the look of deep concentration as she took the right hand lane. As they began the countdown from 3 to start the race I took one last shot of these two racers before they took their last ride down the 2nd. street tunnel for the night. In the end Beatriz won the dog tags and showed them off with a huge smile as all the crowd, friends, and fellow racers looked on in applause.

Now for the mens division it was Tim McGee taking home the dog tags. Tim began the night of racing by holding the fastest qualifying time of 23.55 which barely surpassed the second best time set by James Zaldua of 23.58 which was only .03 seconds slower ! These two racers beat some very impressive riders throughout the night to meet each other in one of the most intense races I have seen to decide a winner for an event. What made this even more special for Tim McGee was the fact that this win comes about a week after winning his sprint, keirin, and team medals at his very first state track championship ! This guy is a beast and took out hundreds of racers and took home the prestigious dog tags. Congratulations to both Tim McGee and Beatriz Rodriguez on their wins.

So my final thought on the 2012 WOLFPACK HUSTLE MIDNIGHT DRAG RACES is this. No matter what you do in life make sure you do it to your fullest potential and with that said I give the WOLFPACK HUSTLE props for putting together such a incredible event, you definitely went all out with this one and I can not wait to come out and compete/cover this race again ! #YOUKNOWWAZGOOD

RARE CAMPAGNOLO CHAIN RINGS

So if you were to ask anyone what name comes to mind when they are asked what is the most prestigious manufacturer of all time when it comes to cycling I would bet at least 8 times out of 10 they would say CAMPAGNOLO. When I dropped in the THE BICYCLE STAND the other day my friend Evan showed me these rare CAMPAGNOLO chainrings he had recently come upon.

First take notice of the uniqueness of each of these 4 chain rings and the differences that set them apart. I know one of these is a 56 tooth ring and that right there is rare in its self, but what is even more crazy about the rareness of this particular chain ring is for those of you out there that know about this will take notice to the holes that are drilled out in the chain ring. These chain rings do not come stock like that from the factory. In fact the process in which is used here is called DRILLIUM. Drillium is a delicate process that is usually done by machine however it appears that these chain rings were done by hand. If you look closely you will be able to notice the slight imperfections. Now before you go around drilling holes in your chain rings just take in mind that this is a tedious task in which the holes must be drilled in a specific places in which the structural integrity is not compromised when a large amount of torque is placed upon the chain ring. In today’s era we have super lightweight materials such as aluminum being one of the most popular so there is not mush need for weight to be shaved especially with many frames being constructed of carbon fiber.

Second, I would like to point out one of the 54 tooth chain rings is also drilled in such a way where the original owner had tried to recreate the CAMPAGNOLO clover logo and had even went a step further by chiseling the stems of the clovers by hand. This process was called PANTOGRAPHING in which back in the day was a method used by builders to make their mark on high end bicycles that they would build. This is truly a one of a kind find by Evan at the THE BICYCLE STAND.

Third and finally I would like to point out the fact that CAMPAGNOLO chain rings never came in black. The black 54 tooth ring was powder coated by the original owner. Then on top of already making it unique in color the owner went a step further and also drilled the chain ring by hand. Simply amazing !!
