INTERBIKE 2012 // American Classic Aero 420

One of the stops I had to make sure I hit at the 2012 Interbike show in Las Vegas, NV was the AMERICAN CLASSIC booth. I have been hearing so much about these wheels lately and I decided to do some investigating for myself so that I could share it with all of you out there.

I have always been a huge fan of the “Mavic Ellipse” wheelsets, however, I myself have had many problems recently with my set of Ellipse wheels. So when it comes down to performance I believe in taking a scientific approach towards building your bike, especially when it comes to building up your race or “track bike”. One huge difference I noticed between the Mavic Ellipse and the AERO 420 by AMERICAN CLASSIC was the overall weight. The Mavic Ellipse wheelset weighs in at appx. 1895 grams with the rear wheels weighing appx. 995 grams and the front wheel weighing appx. 905 grams. The AMERICAN CLASSIC AERO 420 wheelset weighs appx. 1585 grams, with a rear wheel weight coming in at 840 grams and the front weighing only 745 grams. This is already a huge difference when you are able to drop appx. 315 grams just by switching wheelsets to the AERO 420 WHEELS. This is absolutely astonishing to me because most full carbon wheels do not even weigh less than 1585 grams for a set ! There is appx. 453.59237 grams in one pound and by shaving 315 grams on just the wheelset you use will drop your overall bike weight by .6944651 pounds (appx. 3/4 of a pound). Now keep in mind that the Mavic Ellipse wheelset comes with 20 spokes in the front and rear wheel and has a 30mm deep rim profile. When this is compared to the AERO 420 WHEELS you can not help but notice the differences. The AERO 420 WHEELS have a 34mm deep rim profile and have a spoke count of 24 in the rear and 18 in the front wheel. Technically the AMERICAN CLASSIC wheels have 2 more total spokes than the ellipse wheels and also have a deeper profile rim but still weigh less than the Mavic Ellipse wheelset. One thing I must point out in the design of the rear AERO 420 wheel is that it has 24 spokes compared to only 20 with the Ellipse wheel. By adding 4 spokes to the rear wheel you will notice a significant difference in the stiffness of the wheel compared to the Mavic ellipse. When you are trying to shave seconds off your time you do not want any flexing of the wheels when applying torque because any flex in the wheel will make you lose power.

The next key feature I would like to point out about the AMERICAN CLASSIC AERO 420 WHEELS is their use of ceramic bearings. When using a ceramic bearing you are doing two things. One, the ceramic bearings are going to be lighter in weight compared to any other kinds of bearings. Two, because these are ceramic they offer superb rolling with little to no resistance while also maintaining performance over a long period of time or use. This is something to think about when choosing a good track wheelset that you plan on riding on the street and on the track. I know the next wheelset I own is going to be the AMERICAN CLASSIC AERO 420 WHEELS without a doubt.

I would like to thank all of the crew at AMERICAN CLASSIC who helped me out during my Interbike 2012 visit to their booth. I would also like to thank Helen for sitting down with me and going over their product line and making me a true believer in the products they manufacture.

FORTUNE 700 SERIES TIME TRIAL recap

fortune700flyer

So yesterday was the first of four events for the Fortune 700 Race to the End of Summer Sessions III. The racers were faced with a 3 lap time trial of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Ca. Each lap was approximately 3.57 miles which ended up being a total of 10.71 miles. This was mapped out courtesy of the event coordinators for this event series. I think the highlight of the day had to be the run by Edgar “WILLO” Juarez, who finished with a time of 20:37 which was 1 minute and 22 seconds ahead of the second place time for mens fixed gear. Not only was Edgar’s time good enough to win the Mens 1st. Place for fixed gear, but his time also beat the 1st. Place Mens Road division by 31 seconds !!! WOW ! THIS GUY IS A BEAST !!!! Edgar “WILLO” Juarez averaged a pace of appx. 31.16 mph for the entire 10.71 mile time trial. I still can not explain how incredible this was to see happen and the fact that he is a good friend made it that much more special. So congratulations again to Edgar and to all of the winners yesterday who came out and gave it their all. I can not wait to see what happens next Sunday !

On Sunday August 19, 2012 a large group of parents and their children got together at Los Cerritos Park which is located in Bixby Knolls, Ca.(long beach). This was not just any ordinary bicycle ride. In fact, this is something very special that is put on every month to help young bicycle riders learn to ride as a group while also learning all of the laws of the road to help keep them safe. Kids from all ages showed up on this particular Sunday afternoon to take part in this group bike ride. The Workshop LB has been taking part in this event by offering free bike tune ups and maintenance tips to all parents and kids that come out to Kidical Mass, but this time was even more special because PRO-TEC Helmets has teamed up with The Workshop LB and Mashafix.com to provide free helmets to these young riders. PRO-TEC believes in tradition and so many many adults have grown up wearing PRO-TEC helmets that it is why we pass along this tradition to the kids that come out for this event. We encourage anyone in the LA County and Long Beach, Ca. area to come out and take part in Kidical Mass. PRODUCT REVIEW // FAMLI STRAPS los angeles

I think the first thing that stood out to me with the STRAPS was the color purple. I have yet to see very many companies use such a deep color purple like FAMLI STRAPS does. Besides that I like how the straps are reinforced with metal at the ends of the straps to keep them from fraying over time. The straps are also fairly stiff yet not to stiff so for some it may be a more comfortable strap for everyday use as well as tricking. After 2 weeks of vigorous testing these straps look pretty good for the abuse they were put threw. So if you are looking for a good Fixed Freestyle strap that is not only affordable but comes in many different color options then I suggest you check these out. I will have them down at THE WORKSHOP LB on display for a few days so if you are in the area be sure to come by and check them out…. and did I mention they are HAND MADE RIGHT HERE IN LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA !

The top tube pad is definitely longer than most top tube pads I have seen or have used before. For those of you that are doing tricks this is definitely going to cover the entire top tube so if you are looking for a new top tube pad FAMLI STRAPS has got you covered their and they have many different color options to choose from as well.

The HIP POUCH is very spacious and also has a hidden pocket built in that if there was not a note attached to the hip pouch when they sent it to me I would have never found it hahahahah ! Besides the secret pocket I really like that this bag has plenty of space to fit all my tools, tube, and bike pump for when I want to go for a ride and not have to lug around a huge bag. One thing I noticed about this pouch was that it did not have a U-Lock holster built in to it as many other hip pouches on the mark have built in. However despite this I could really care lees because the size of the pouch makes up for that and I have always been one to put my U-Lock in my belt as I ride.

Welcome to the Team – Edgar “WILLO” Juarez

Here is a short clip of Edgar doing some training over at THE WORKSHOP LB bike shop on his fresh built UNKNOWN LV2 track bike. He is not only the newest, but the first member to the UNKNOWN BIKE CO. fast bike team. Not only did Edgar join up with UNKNOWN BIKE CO. but he has also joined forces with THE WORKSHOP LB. I expect some big things in the near future for Willo. Right now he is focusing hard on racing on the velodrome but training vigorously for the upcoming Lord of Griffith race on September 2nd. To Edgar he is still a “UNKNOWN” just like the bike he rides and until he keeps winning I can promise you that he won’t stop until he is number one. This guy is a beast and you can find him training everyday over at THE WORKSHOP LB pushing a 49/14 ratio like it ain’t no thang !! #YOUKNOWWAZGOOD !!

PRODUCT REVIEW state bicycle co. “CONTENDER”

It was back in April of this year that I first got to see the CONTENDER from STATE BICYCLE CO. I have always been a huge fan of steel frames so when I saw Scott and Andre’s bikes at the Red Bull event I was eager to learn more about these. Now their bikes were built up with some high end components however the way the CONTENDER comes stock is still a great ride and value right out of the box. The first thing that catches my eye is the iridescent silver paint job, it definitely catches your eye. Then I started to check out the components on the bike from its carbon fiber fork to its SRAM power spline crank set. The bike has a very comfortable ride and its geometry is not to aggressive to ride on the street everyday to commute yet with a few changes in components the bike is race worthy. The bike comes standard with a 48/16 gear ratio which for some may be a bit strong yet the 172.5 crank arms give you more leverage to make this ratio feel like a piece of cake. So if you are in the market for a good steel frame bike that come complete at a good price I would definitely check out the STATE BICYCLE SITE.

So this past Saturday was a blast !! I had so much fun out there with everybody that came out to the event. I remember showing up to the Staples Center to see hundreds of riders having fun and ready for a fun filled day of riding. I will be making a video of this event so be prepared for that. I want to thank all my cameramen that came out to help film this event because without all of your help I would not have been able to do this to the scale I wanted to. I want to encourage anyone who was at this event to email me their photos and or video clips to mashafix@gmail.com along with their information so I may credit you for your work if it is used. I also want to thank all of the Sponsors that helped make this day happen. My intent was to make this day dedicated to all the kids out there that support Mashafix.com and everything I do. Without all of you out there showing your support for the blog this past year I do not think I could have kept it going so I thank all of my fans out there. I plan on throwing more and more events so be prepared for that because it is all about giving back to the cycling community in which I love so much. AGENDA LBC by mashafix.com

So yesterday was the last day for Agenda out here at the convention center in downtown Long Beach, Ca. This was my first time going to this event and it was described to me as being the “interbike” for clothing. So when hearing this I just had to check it out. Now this event is not open to the public so I want to give a big thanks to ZANE MEYER for getting both myself and Jason Clary into event. It was a little weird to me being there since many clothing outfitters would not let you take pictures of their clothing fearing you are going to “copy” their design. So I took some cool photos whenever I was permitted to do so.

As I got to roaming around the convention center I made my way to the GoPro booth and was coaxed into signing up for there raffle in which they were giving out free GoPro cameras. So I signed up and long story short, I came back about ten minute after signing up to win a camera to my surprise. I am definitely stoked to have 3 GoPro cameras now hahahhaa ! So SICK ! After that I started walking around and made my way to something else familiar, the CHROME booth. As i was there I got to talking with the president of CHROME and he took me for a little tour of some of their newest bags to hit the streets. When he had showed me their new camera backpack I almost flipped head over heels ! This new camera bag is so sick ! It has multiple lens pockets and other storage compartments that the old bag did not have as well as a laptop pocket. I am always on the go and most of the time find myself on my bike so this bag is a must have for me as soon as they are released. I know CHROME also has something very very special they are working on that I am even more excited about but I promised to keep my mouth shut :)

After visiting with the CHROME booth I made my way to the ROCKSMITH booth. What caught my eye was their Wu Tang Clan clothing collection !!!! SuuuuuuuuWuuuuuuu !!!! I am such a huge fan of the Wu and when I saw just the hats I about died. So if you love Wu as much as me be on the look out for that collection coming soon.

I think one of the funniest parts to my day was when I stopped by the SHARK FREESTYLE watch booth. I just had to show them my all time favorite watch that I just so happened to tattoo on my wrist. It really blew their minds and I was happy to know that I am the first person they ever met to tattoo a SHARK watch !! I am even more excited that because of this they are going to send me the new model of the watch I tattooed !!! #SHARK4LIFE !!

I also ran into Mr. ~@Brad Parker. As many of you know he was upset back when I took Keey to his Dirty 30 rail but Brad and I finally put that behind us at Red Bull this year and took a great pic here at Agenda together. Brad is doing good with his skating as his main focus now. Brad shreds no matter whats he rides or does so its so sick to see him doing well in the skate world because I know he loves it.

Well thanks again to Zane for getting us in for this years Agenda and I look forward to the next one but more excited for interbike this year !!!!
